Job Title: Early Years Practitioner
Reports to: Room Leader / Nursery Manager
Who is Bal Krishna Nursery?
Bal Krishna, an Independent nursery in Woolwich (SE18) with Ofsted rating of Good is looking for a qualified Early Years (EY) Practitioner to support the nursery team in the day-to-day running of their room.
The EY Practitioner will be required to work in a room alongside other members of staff for learning, development and care of children between the age of 2 to 5 Year Olds.
The Nursery will promote care, protection, development and education of children under the statutory age for the benefit of local communities, based on the principles and values of the Hindu faith and culture. Students of any faith or none are welcome. To compliment this, the Nursery will provide religious and cultural outings and activities to enhance education and learning. The Nursery will incorporate general awareness on the relevance of Hindu spirituality, culture and multiculturalism based upon the teachings and principles of Hinduism.
What is the role?
- To ensure a high standard of physical, emotional, social and intellectual care for all children in the nursery
- To ensure all children are safeguarded and their welfare and safety is promoted
- To give support to other team members within their immediate room and within the wider nursery
- To work as part of a team in order to provide an enabling environment in which all individual children can play, learn and develop
- To build and maintain strong partnership working with parents to enable children’s needs to be met
What will you do?
- Act as a key person for a group of children as allocated by nursery management
- Have sound knowledge of all children in the setting and an excellent knowledge of your key children
- Plan, observe, assess and keep accurate record of your key children's interests and stages of development and learning journeys. Share this with parents, carers and other key adults in the child’s life and institute reviews for parents, in conjunction with the Manager
- Develop and maintain strong partnerships and communication with parents/carers to facilitate day-to-day caring, early learning needs and progress of their child
- Manage children’s behaviour positively, communicate with parents to support the children’s development needs
- Prepare the learning environment, assisting the organisation of the classroom, resources and coordinate activities to meet the needs of the children
- Implement a wide and varied programme of activities for the children individually and as a group
- Plan and provide effective care, teaching and learning that enables children to progress and develop in preparation for school
- Support the provision of a high quality environment to meet the needs of individual children ensuring you have awareness of any disabilities, family cultures and medical histories
- Be flexible with working practices of the nursery setting, undertaking other responsibilities and duties as required, such as domestic tasks, preparation of snack meals, cleaning of equipment, etc
- Supervision of meals and mealtimes and ensuring individual meal/milk requirements are met
- To sit with your key children and supporting the development of children’s independence and table manners
- To wash and change key children as required
- Work as part of a team to ensure effective staff placements and ratios are met, being flexible on shift patterns to ensure children’s safety at all times. Take responsibility to inform nursery management if staff placement falls below required levels
- Conduct risk assessments as appropriate
- Have up to date knowledge of safeguarding issues and be able to identify signs of possible abuse or neglect and respond to nursery management in a timely manner e.g. over children, parents, the safety of the environment, preserving confidentiality as necessary
- Ensure good standards of safety, hygiene and cleanliness are maintained at all times
- Read, understand and adhere to all policies and procedures relevant to your role and the safe running of the nursery
- Keep completely confidential any information regarding the children, their families or other staff that is acquired as part of the job
- To be involved in out of working hours activities, e.g. training, monthly staff meetings, parents evening, fundraising events, etc
- Work alongside management and staff team to ensure that the nursery philosophy is fulfilled
- Be aware of the high profile of the setting and to uphold its standards at all times, both in work hours and outside
- To remain professional at all times with direct and indirect communication
- Occasionally situations may arise that require you to perform other duties or tasks as may be reasonably requested by nursery management
Experience of working with all ages across the Early Years would be an advantage as would experience of teaching children early literacy and numeracy skills. We are looking for a creative, caring, enthusiastic, motivated and committed individual who genuinely loves to work with children to join our team.
What else is important for the role?
- Must have an understanding of the EYFS curriculum and statutory requirements
- A minimum Level 2 NVQ in Early Years Childcare (or equivalent)
- Valid Pediatric First Aid qualification preferable
- Valid safeguarding/child protection certificate
- Some experience in a childcare setting preferred
- Strong communication skills both written and verbal
- Strong presentation and organisational skills
- Ability to work as part of a team to create a positive working environment
- Ability to use initiative and demonstrate creativity
- A passion for the Early Years and excellent understanding
- Appropriate level of criminal record disclosure to be undertaken
